One Dance: Workshops 2026

In addition to the open classes and performances through which One Dance City will transform Plovdiv into a dance floor for everyone from May 28 to June 5, the studio workshop module offers a close encounter and direct collaboration with choreographers who bring a unique artistic vision to the performing arts.

On May 29, between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., Belgian choreographer Lara Barsacq will present her “Archive and Fabulation” workshop. She will share creative approaches and tools, drawing on current questions and materials from her works, including “Kassia Undead” which we are going to see on May 30 at the Boris Hristov House of Culture. She will propose exploratory experiments around and based on archives; those of dance, art, and gestures that have been forgotten or reinvented.  Through images and narratives, each participant’s imagination will be engaged. They will also explore performativity, imagined dances, as well as reproduced or transformed ones

On May 30, from 11:00 to 12:30, Zora Snake will hold his workshop with the title “Into the Lianas”. In the context of his new work “Combat des Lianes”, Zora Snake explores the duality between humankind and nature, and the impact of our ecosystem on living beings. Drawing on his immersive journey into the forests of eastern and western Cameroon - where he brought the entire artistic team with him - the choreographer revisits the rituals of the Baka communities of Cameroon, an indigenous people on the verge of disappearance. A dance of deconstructed polyphonies within bodies, each one a manifesto in its own right.

In this workshop, choreographer Zora Snake will share part of his creative process. Participants will also be invited to experiment the boundaries between dance and artistic performance, drawing on the body's resources and vital energies freed from our individual vocabularies. The workshop will further address gesture, form, space, movement and dramaturgy as "decolonial aesthetics" of dance on the African continent. It is inspired by Snake’s latest performance, “Combat des lianes” which will take place on May 29 at the Boris Hristov House of Culture.

On May 31, from 15:00 to 16:30, the final workshop will be led by Jaciel Neri, a choreographer, curator, and specialist in international cooperation in the performing arts, as well as the founder of the company “moving borders” and the CAMP_iN performing arts festival in Mexico. Through Latin rhythms like cumbia, "Kadencia" offers a journey from discovering our own rhythm to building a shared dance. Approached from an inclusive perspective, we use dance not to seek technical virtuosity, but to position the body as a catalyst for optimism, reflection, and empathy. An invitation to celebrate diversity, foster social connection, and reconnect through joy.

As one of Europe’s most dynamic performing arts, contemporary dance increasingly moves into open urban spaces to become even more accessible and engaging. The programme is designed for all generations and for people regardless of dance skills or experience, inviting those who have never encountered this art form before.
